WWE has the Raw house show in Des Moines and SmackDown in Cedar Falls, IA. We’re looking for reports to newstips@wrestlingobserver.com.

Raw will be Monday night from Omaha with The Miz vs. Jeff Hardy for the IC title. There is also a SmackDown house show in Rochester, MN.

SmackDown and 205 Live take place on Tuesday in Sioux Falls, IA with Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Randy Orton in the main event for the top contendership for the WWE title.

Gordon Solie, an icon figure of this industry who announced more pro wrestling matches on television than any man who ever lived, passed away from brain cancer officially on 7/28 at the age of 71. Solie was found that morning by his family, and it is being listed as the date of his death. It is believed his death may have taken place as early as late Wednesday night, as nobody heard from him on Thursday, and the house was exactly the same on Friday morning as it was on Wednesday night, when his daughter was over for dinner.

SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE

  • Though she’s gotten some support online to take over the vacant position on the SmackDown announce team after JBL’s departure, Renee Young tweeted: “While I truly appreciate all of the support on this, I would just like to remind everyone that I was never very good at commentary for NXT”
  • The next four episodes of the Mae Young Classic will be uploaded on the WWE Network tomorrow. Those episodes will include the second round, quarterfinal, and semifinal matches and will set things up for the live final on the WWE Network on September 12th after SmackDown.
  • The Times of India has an article on MYC participant Kavita Devi.
  • Safe Horizon shared Charlotte Flair’s story of overcoming domestic violence that she wrote about in her upcoming book.
  • In an interesting title stat, The Miz is approaching a combined 444 days as WWE Intercontinental Champion through his seven reigns with the title. He surpassed Tito Santana’s 443 days and will surpass Honky Tonk Man’s record of 454 this week. Pedro Morales currently holds the record with 619 days.
  • Carmella tweeted that her and Big Cass have bought their own house.
  • Kurt Angle spoke to the Miami Herald about his return to WWE, his favorite wrestlers on the roster, and his storyline with Jason Jordan.

Pro Wrestling

  • Dave Meltzer on last night’s Wrestling Observer Radio mentioned that both Matt Riddle and Jeff Cobb are heading to New Japan for an upcoming tour. There doesn’t seem to be any specifics as to how they will be used or when they will arrive, but it is possible that they could be one of many teams participating in the World Tag League this December. Riddle and Cobb have teamed on the indies as The Chosen Bros.
  • PWG finishes off the Battle of Los Angeles tonight with the remainder of the weekend-long tournament. Still alive are Dezmond Xavier, Marty Scurll, Rey Fenix, Penta 0M, Zack Sabre Jr., Ricochet, Donovan Dijak, Sammy Guevara, Travis Banks, Jeff Cobb, Matt Riddle, and Keith Lee. The next tournament matches won’t be known until they happen, with a triple threat elimination match set to decide the winner.
  • Though Dave Meltzer called BOLA night two one of the best shows in PWG history, things were marred a bit in the main event when the ring broke shortly after it started.
  • The team of Pete Dunne, Trent Seven & Tyler Bate won CHIKARA’s annual King of Trios tournament last night in Wolverhampton, West Midlands. They defeated Meiko Satomura, DASH Chisako & Cassandra Miyagi in the finals.
  • HoHo Lun announced that he can now start taking bookings worldwide.
  • The PAX Rumble was held this weekend at PAX West, featuring an intro from Kenny Omega.

UFC/MMA

  • Regarding their fight last night in Rotterdam, Alexander Volkov mentioned in the post-fight conference that with all the eye pokes caused by Stefan Struve, he didn’t think Struve fought all that fairly.
  • Demetrius Johnson had strong words for Ray Borg following some pretty confident words from the challenger.
  • Jose Aldo is willing to face anyone at UFC 217 and called it a dream to fight at Madison Square Garden.
  • FloCombat interviewed Tony Ferguson about his next fight against Kevin Lee.
