WON BACK ISSUE: July 3, 2000 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: WWF wins lawsuit to go to Viacom, King of the Ring review, more

Delaware Chancery Court Judge William Chandler ruled in favor of the World Wrestling Federation and Viacom on 6/27 in the lawsuit filed by the USA Network, which will result, officially, in September, for all WWF cable programming moving to Viacom stations TNN and MTV. Chandler ruled against USA Network’s claim that their right of first refusal in the contract, which expires in September, only pertains to the four wrestling shows on the network and not to an overall marketing deal between Viacom and the WWFE as a company.

TUESDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE

  • Daniel Bryan tweeted that Renee Young will join him for a “rogue edition” of Talking Smack on Tout after SmackDown tonight.
  • Tonight’s 205 Live has Neville vs. Ariya Daivari in a non-title match and Rich Swann & Cedric Alexander vs. TJP & Tony Nese.
  • After she did some of the interviews on Raw last night, it seems that Renee Young will be on both Raw and SmackDown going forward. She posted a photo with Charly Caruso on Instagram and wrote: “Dream team back in the (RAW) hiiiizouse!!! @charlycarusowwe (and yes, I’ll still be on Smackdown)”
  • It was announced on Raw last night that next Monday will have Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman vs. Samoa Joe in a triple threat match. There will also be a Miz TV segment with Jason Jordan.
  • John Cena and Roman Reigns have continued to build to a future match on Twitter. Reigns initially posted about the Philly crowd being quiet at Battleground, calling himself “The Big Fight” and saying that the crowd better bring their best when they return. Cena responded with: “Pride…always comes before the fall. Don’t get too far ahead of yourself young man. But if U want a BigFight careful what u wish for… #RAW” Reigns told Cena to come to his yard if he wants to face him.
  • Finn Balor thanked everyone for wishing him a happy birthday as he turns 36 years old today.
  • Brandon Howard has an article for Fightful that looks at which wrestlers in the women’s division are getting the most views on YouTube. Nikki Bella (22), Alexa Bliss (22), and Bayley (19) were featured in the most videos with over 500,000 views from January 29th to July 10th of this year. Eleven of Bella’s videos also included John Cena, though she hasn’t been on TV since WrestleMania.
  • Matt Hardy wrote about the ongoing legal situation with Anthem: “FUN FACT-Myself, Jeff & Reby spent $2500 & 4 days creating The Final Deletion set, with ZERO help from TNA, as it was our vision & creation.”
  • Kofi Kingston is now the only wrestler to win the WWE, World, Raw, and SmackDown tag titles.

Pro Wrestling

  • In a story that will be important to both pro wrestling and MMA, the New York Times has an article about chronic traumatic encephalopathy in football players. Dr. Ann McKee of the CTE Center at Boston University examined the brains of 111 deceased former NFL players and found that 110 of them had CTE. As McKee notes, there’s a selection bias involved with the process given that many of the brains were donated by families because the person showed symptons of CTE.
  • The most interesting booking note from the G1 through six shows is that Kazuchika Okada and Kenny Omega are both still undefeated, with them at the top of Block B with six points each. Minoru Suzuki and EVIL have four points. Toru Yano, Tama Tonga, SANADA, Juice Robinson, and Michael Elgin all have two points, and Satoshi Kojima remains winless.
  • There will be A Block matches on the show that takes place tomorrow morning from Miyagi at 5:30 a.m. ET. Those are: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Hirooki Goto, Tetsuya Naito vs. Yuji Nagata, Kota Ibushi vs. Togi Makabe, Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Bad Luck Fale, Tomohiro Ishii vs. YOSHI-HASHI.
  • Sports Illustrated posted a story about a day in the life of Ricochet as he had a match against Rey Mysterio for XWA. He discusses WWE’s cruiserweight division and his situation with Lucha Underground.
  • What Culture Pro Wrestling announced that they’re bringing back their “Loaded” series, which had been canceled after YouTube’s changes to how wrestling promotions can monetize their content. The next episode will debut on their subscription service on August 3rd, then will be on Twitch on August 4th before coming to YouTube on August 5th.
  • Travis Banks will face Keith Lee at PROGRESS Wrestling’s show in London on July 30th.
  • Ring of Honor reacted to the demise of Daryl (Hiromu Takahashi’s stuffed cat).

UFC/MMA

  • Jon Jones said that Daniel Cormier knows that he wouldn’t use steroids and called the comments an attack on his character.
  • The UFC released the countdown special for UFC 214. They’ve also uploaded the first and second episodes of Embedded for the show.
  • Dana White told ESPN that he hasn’t had any conversations with Jon Jones since Jones was forced off of UFC 200.
  • Mike Tyson said that Conor McGregor is “going to get killed” by Floyd Mayweather in their boxing match.
