FIGURE FOUR WEEKLY: Figure Four Weekly 8/14/2017: PROGRESS comes to Boston

On the second stop of their weekend in the United States, British promotion PROGRESS Wrestling presented an intimate show in the Boston area on Sunday night. Things didn’t go quite as planned up to that point. It started when PROGRESS and WWE United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne couldn’t wrestle on either show after being busted open in an indie match on Friday. Then, TK Cooper suffered an ankle injury in New York and the excessive heat in the crowded venue marred what otherwise appeared to be a fun show.

The country of Australia, apparently wrestling-starved, banged out amazing business when tickets went on sale for an October tour of World Championship Wrestling, which includes four television shoots. On 7/21, the first show that went on sale, a Nitro taping in Melbourne on 10/13, sold out the Rod Laver Arena (capacity for a Nitro taping would be probably close to 10,000) with tickets priced from $300 Australian down to $65, sold out in less than three hours (reports of a 90 minute sellout are exaggerated, but only slightly).

TUESDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE

  • WWE returns to the Barclays Center for the fourth straight night as the venue hosts SmackDown tonight. Fallout from SummerSlam should be the theme of the show, including The Usos and Natalya appearing for the first time as new champs. The Jinder Mahal vs. Shinsuke Nakamura and Kevin Owens vs. Shane McMahon storylines should also be furthered.
  • 205 Live tonight has Akira Tozawa getting his rematch against Neville.
  • The domestic violence charges against Paige have been dropped. A representative for the 9th Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s office told TMZ that the case is closed because the the victim, which would be Alberto El Patron, did not want to press charges.
  • Bodybuilder Dallas McCarver, boyfriend of Dana Brooke, passed away early this morning, TMZ reported. He was just 26. It appears he choked on food and was found unconscious shortly after midnight. He was then transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police say there’s no sign of foul play. Brooke, who spoke to TMZ, told McCarver’s fans to stay strong.
  • Sasha Banks will defend her Raw Women’s Championship against Alexa Bliss next week.
  • Loudwire talked to various WWE superstars on their dream rock/metal WrestleMania entrances.
  • WWE.com had an article on Danielle Fishel, aka Topanga on Boy Meets World, being a fan of new signee Lio Rush and buying his last piece of merchandise.

Pro Wrestling

  • It was announced today that Tony Schiavone will return to pro wrestling announcing by calling the action at MLW: One-Shot on October 5th. He’s done virtually no pro wrestling broadcasting since the final episode of WCW Monday Nitro in 2001. He will be joined by Rich Bocchini, formerly Rich Brennan of NXT.
  • Cody will be a guest on Jerry Lawler’s Dinner With the King podcast this week.

UFC/MMA

  • The UFC released the first and second episodes of Embedded for Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather.
  • McGregor and Paulie Malignaggi got into a confrontation at the official arrivals for McGregor vs. Mayweather. Malignaggi also discussed the incident.
  • Owen Roddy, John Kavanagh, Artem Lobov, and cutman Tommy McCormack will be in McGregor’s corner on Saturday.
  • Tony Zucca posted a short video on Instagram showing Matt Hughes starting to grapple again following his serious auto accident a few months ago.
  • Alexander Gustafsson spoke to Swedish MMA site Kimura, denying that a match between him and Jon Jones is happening at UFC 218.
  • Marcin Held will face Teemu Packalen at a UFC Fight Night event in Gdansk, Poland on October 21st.
  • Sean O’Malley is set to face Terrion Ware at at the Ultimate Fighter 26 finale in Las Vegas.
  • Court McGee vs. Sean Strickland is set for the UFC Fight Night in Norfolk, VA on November 11th.
  • Nick Hein is out of the Rotterdam UFC Fight Night on September 2nd. He was originally scheduled to face Zabit Magomedsharipov. UFC is currently looking for a replacement.
  • MMAjunkie spoke to Francis Ngannou, who feels ‘lost’ following the cancellation of his match against Junior Dos Santos which was scheduled for UFC 215.Al Iaquinta isn’t happy with the current direction of the UFC.
  • Mike Goldberg talks about working with Joe Rogan.
