For the first time since July’s lackluster Battleground show, SmackDown will put on a brand-exclusive pay-per-view as Hell in a Cell takes place in Detroit on Sunday night. Battleground was a night where nearly everything went wrong. The Punjabi Prison main event was awful, AJ Styles vs. Kevin Owens had a botched finish, and only the tag title match between The New Day and The Usos saved it from being a totally irredeemable show.

WEDNESDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE
- NXT is taping its next set of television episodes at Full Sail University tonight. The shows will feature the final build to TakeOver: Houston. With Triple H in India to promote WWE’s December tour of the country, he’s missing the tapings for the first time ever. Road Dogg tweeted that he and Shawn Michaels are two of the people holding down the fort while Triple H is away.
- WWE posted that Jeff Hardy underwent successful surgery yesterday to repair his torn rotator cuff, with Jeff captioning a photo on Instagram with “Let theHealing begin!” Jeff figures to be out of action for several months.
- Pro Wrestling Sheet reported that current plans are for Bray Wyatt to wrestle as the “Sister Abigail” character against Finn Balor at TLC and wear a different outfit.
- Shane McMahon vs. Kevin Owens on Sunday’s pay-per-view is now a falls count anywhere Hell in a Cell match.
- Charlotte Flair made an appearance on Wrestling Observer Live today to promote her and Ric Flair’s new book.
- Dave Meltzer tweeted that AJ Styles is being saved for dark matches after SmackDown so that the crowd doesn’t leave before 205 Live ends. The post-show dark match last night was Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura & Randy Orton vs. Baron Corbin, Jinder Mahal & Rusev.
- In an interview with TMZ, John Cena said that he’ll never retire from WWE because the company is family to him.
- The Onion also ran a parody story on Cena preparing for “AutumnSlam.”
Pro Wrestling
- Eddie Kingston announced that he’s no longer with Impact Wrestling and is now open for bookings.
- Jerry Lawler paid tribute to Lance Russell on this week’s episode of his podcast. Lawler said his goodbyes to Russell at the end of the show.
- Dave Brown spoke to WMC Action News 5 in Memphis about Russell’s passing.
- Steve Beverly also posted a video about his memories of Russell.
- Bushiroad’s Takaaki Kidani is moving from his representative director position to the company’s board of directors, with Kidani saying that he wants to be more involved with the development of their intellectual property. Bushiroad is the parent company of New Japan Pro Wrestling and Kidani is NJPW’s chairman.
UFC/MMA
- Max Holloway defending his featherweight title against Frankie Edgar is set for the main event of UFC 218 in Detroit on December 2nd.
- Kevin Lee challenged Conor McGregor to impress him if he wants a shot at the “real” lightweight title after he beats Tony Ferguson. Lee also said that Khabib Nurmagomedov doesn’t want to face any challenging opponents.
- Ferguson said that he’s surprised UFC 216 is still going on this Saturday, but he’ll be thinking of the victims of the tragedy in Las Vegas and his heart is into his fight against Lee.
- Derrick Lewis discussed UFC 216 still going on and how he’s dealt with Hurricane Harvey in Houston.
- Demetrious Johnson said that he’ll be getting PPV points for the first time for Saturday’s show.
- Ray Borg guaranteed a win against Johnson.
- The UFC uploaded the first episode of Embedded for Saturday’s PPV.
- Jon Anik, Joe Rogan, and Daniel Cormier will be the play-by-play team for UFC 216.
- Matt Hughes honored the nurses who treated him after the accident that he was in earlier this year.
