WON NEWSLETTER: September 13, 2021 Observer Newsletter: AEW All Out review, Gable Steveson signs with WWE
Bryan Danielson, Adam Cole (Austin Jenkins), Ruby Soho (Dori Prange) and Minoru Suzuki were all unannounced surprises on AEW’s All Out on 9/5 from the NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, IL.
The show may end up historical and certainly felt like it was historic in the building. It felt it just as much if not more watching on television with the announcers soundtrack. In the days that have passed, many have talked about it as the best U.S.-based PPV show in history and it has to be in the discussion. There have been a few better shows judged strictly by match quality, and it’s too soon to ascertain anything long-term of what it means. Short-term it led to Dynamite beating Raw for the first time ever same day in the same week.
But when you consider atmosphere, news value, crowd, announcing match depth and creativity, it’s a hard one to beat.

WEDNESDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE
- Mandy Rose, Gigi Dolin, and Jacy Jayne’s stable in NXT is now known as “Toxic Attraction.” On last night’s NXT, Rose debuted a new look with brown hair, After Rose interrupted a tag match where Dolin & Jayne were facing Kayden Carter & Kacy Catanzaro on the show, Rose, Dolin & Jayne defeated Sarray, Carter & Catanzaro in a six-woman tag match.
- With Raquel Gonzalez and Franky Monet’s scheduled NXT Women’s Championship match not taking place last night, WWE uploaded a post-show video where Monet blamed Robert Stone for the match not happening. Monet told Stone to get NXT general manager William Regal on the phone and fix this.
- Anriel Howard is now going by the name “Lash Legend” in NXT. Howard is a former WNBA player. She played college basketball at Mississippi State and Texas A&M.
- WWE shared pictures of Tommaso Ciampa and his daughter with the NXT Championship following Ciampa’s title win last night.
- Big E, Becky Lynch, and Raquel Gonzalez were guests on this morning’s episode of WWE’s The Bump.
- Complex has an interview with Big E. When asked if he’s given any thought to who could challenge for his WWE Championship, Big E said he wants to see The Hurt Business back together:
Oh yeah, man. The first thought that comes to mind is The Hurt Business. I want to see them back. I want to see them together. Man, just the opportunity to go out there. The story is already there. The history is there, but I beat Bobby, and now Bobby needs to back up and [get] his two cast-off brothers back again. I got two brothers of my own. There are so many opportunities. And, same thing, I look over at SmackDown, it’s Roman and The Bloodline. I am someone who loves that. You look at The Hurt Business, you look at The Bloodline, and those that might be in those two great, incredible passions with really talented performers. But imagine The Hurt Business coming back together to do battle with The New Day. All kinds of incarnations; singles matches, tag matches. Man, there’s so much that we can do there.
So that’s the first order of business. I saw Cedric’s tweet, too, and I sent him the ‘mount up.’ Let him know: bring your boys, get the troop together, because that’s what I want. And I don’t think Bobby is ready to go quietly into that good night. I think he’s got some more fighting. So I want to see him with his troop, and let’s get this thing cracking again.
- In response to a question about fans wanting to see more Black wrestlers on TV throughout pro wrestling, Big E spoke about Black Wrecellence’s list of the 500 best Black wrestlers:
Yeah, man. That’s really dope. And I think the beautiful thing is [that it’s] across companies. One of the things I looked at, and I feel bad because I don’t remember exactly who put them together, but very recently, there was a list of, much like PWI does their list of top 500 wrestlers, it’s the list of the best several hundred Black wrestlers on the planet right now. And to look at that list and to not even be in the top 10, for me, it wasn’t like, ‘oh, I feel slighted.’ It’s ‘oh, man, there are so many incredibly dope Black wrestlers across this country, across the globe.’ And that’s really, really cool. So, in many ways, it feels like a boom period for Black wrestlers. I look around and there are so many [wrestlers] that I’m such a fan of, in WWE and outside of WWE. You look at the Jonathan Gresham’s, the Fred Yehi’s, the Lee Moriarty’s. There are so many guys that I watch them and think, ‘man, those guys are incredible, so dope.’ I can go on and on as well, too. And so many Black women as well, like Trish Adora, but there’s just so many [great performers out there].
- WWE’s YouTube channel uploaded John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar from the September 19, 2002 episode of SmackDown, Triple H vs. Lesnar in a steel cage match from Extreme Rules 2013, and Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins from the September 15, 2014 episode of Raw.
Other Wrestling
- The ROH TV episode that premieres this weekend will be a Pure wrestling edition of the show. It will feature Mike Bennett vs. Rhett Titus in a Pure Rules match, along with a six-man Pure gauntlet match. The wrestlers in the gauntlet match won’t be revealed prior to it taking place.
- Big E responded to AEW’s Powerhouse Hobbs tweeting about his WWE Championship win: “You’re the man, bruh. You already know I’m a massive fan of you. You have all the tools.”
- Hobbs then tweeted to Big E: “You already know what it iz thank you for everything”
- Big E also thanked Windham Rotunda (Bray Wyatt) and Paul Wight for tweets that they sent him.
- Adam Cole told Sports Illustrated about the process of keeping his AEW debut a surprise: “I didn’t even fly into Chicago [the site of All Out], I flew into a different city the day before. I didn’t even stay in the same hotel as Bryan. We showed up to the building while the show was going on, and we waited outside in a trailer. The locker room didn’t even know until the absolute last moment. It was the most secretive debut I’ve ever been involved in, and Tony Khan took every measure to make this as big of a surprise as possible.”
- In an interview with TV Insider, Cole said he personally hadn’t heard of WWE’s idea to have him manage Keith Lee on the main roster: “I personally have never heard anything regarding that. I touched base a little bit on how my meeting with Vince McMahon went really well. We talked for about 30 minutes. He had a lot of complimentary things to say. As far as hearing that specific thing, that was not something I heard about. My four years with NXT was fantastic. My four years with WWE was awesome, but at the end of the day, I wanted to end up with AEW. Now that I’m here, I’m stoked.”
- Cole also spoke to TV Insider about he and Britt Baker now being on the same pro wrestling schedule: “It’s so nice. Britt has been blowing up and is all over the place. I’m so happy for her and proud of what she accomplished. But because our schedules were so different, there were very few times we got to spend time together. She is excited about the idea of me being able to give her suggestions or give my thoughts on things. I love the idea of her giving her opinion to me as well. With me and Britt, it has always been a joint effort. To get to spend real quality time together is nothing but a positive for a relationship.”
- Cole said about facing Frankie Kazarian on tonight’s Dynamite: “I am the biggest Frankie Kazarian fan. I’ve known him for a really long time. In many ways, I think he is criminally underrated. When he is out there, he delivers every time. It has been years since we’ve worked together. As far as a first opponent in AEW, there is nobody better than him. I’m elated at the idea of getting in there with him and showing the AEW what I can do. It’s a perfect debut.
- MMA fighters Kayla Harrison, Paige VanZant, Junior dos Santos, Austin Vanderford, and Andrei Arlovski traveled to tonight’s Dynamite with Dan Lambert.
- AEW announced their latest set of roster rankings.
- ECW Press will be publishing a memoir by Debrah “Madusa” Miceli in spring 2023.
- Singer Harley Cameron is releasing a song called “The IInspiration” featuring Cassie Lee and Jessie McKay on October 20.
- Barstool Sports’ Robbie Fox has an interview with Anthony Bowens.
