SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE

We have two weekend shows up on the site, the Friday night show talking All Elite and last night’s show talking Larry Matysik and a lot of wrestling history including the start of WCW and how it went down, plus last night’s Golden Boy MMA show with Liddell vs. Ortiz and more.

Thanks to everyone for their kind words about Larry Matysik. For those in the area, Larry’s funeral will be this coming Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at the Renner Funeral Home at 120 N. Illinois Ave. in Belleville, IL. Fox 2 in St. Louis and Ch. 4 in St. Louis as well as the Belleville News-Democrat and St. Louis Post-Dispatch are all expected to run stories over the next few days.

This is the Ric Flair “Fire and Ice” video that Larry Matysik did in 1982 that they would play all across the country.

The interest level in last night’s Liddell vs. Ortiz Golden Boy show was well beyond most expectations. There were more than 500,000 searches regarding last night’s show, making it No. 5 for the day yesterday. It was the same as the last UFC PPV and the same as Survivor Series, and five times that of Evolution and Greatest Royal Rumble. If it would have been on TV, it would have done a monster rating. It looks like it will destroy everything but Oscar & Tito’s PPV predictions as far as what people expected going in. That said, Liddell was in no condition to fight and that was far sadder than even watching Ali vs. Trevor Berbick in his last fight when Ali should not have been fighting.

Tom Lawlor suffered a broken left hand in his loss to Deron Winn on the show, and also had three different cuts that required stitches.   

Regarding Fenix, right now it looks like he’ll be out of action for about a month. The injury took place in the first fall of his match with Cavernario, before the missed dive spot that everyone is pointing towards. Right now no word from AAA regarding what it will do about the heavyweight title that Fenix holds and was to defend next Sunday against Brian Cage.

Scheduled for the one hour edited WWE Network version of Starrcade tonight is A.J. Styles vs. Samoa Joe in a cage match, Sasha Banks & Ember Moon & Dana Brooke & Bayley vs. Nia Jax & Tamina & Alicia Fox & Mickie James, Elias concert with Ric Flair (which leads to the eight-women match), Miz TV with Nakamura and Rey Mysterio and I believe Nakamura vs. Mysterio which leads to Miz & Nakamura vs. Mysterio & Rusev.

AAW from last night in Chicago before a sellout of 575 fans: Ace Romero b Stephen Wolf, Fred Yehi b Mance Warner, Paco b Deonn Rusman, Jimmy Jacobs & Josh Briggs b Darby Allin & Jessicka Havok, David Starr & Eddie Kingston b Matt Sydal & Colt Cabana, Trevor Lee d ACH 60:00 (people were raving about this as one of the best matches of the year) in, Eddie Kingston attacked ACH after the match, Sami Callihan b MJF, Curt Stallion & Jake Something b Davey Vega & Mat Fitchett, AR Fox & Myron Reed b Laredo Kid & Rey Hours to keep AAW tag titles, Kyle Rae b Kimber Lee to win the AAW women’s title in a great match, crowd very into this match. Rae used Brass Knux to win the title. WWE

  • No update regarding Bray Wyatt, who returned last night as the replacement for Braun Strowman against Baron Corbin. Perhaps he’ll be the backup if Braun Strowman isn’t ready. Strowman has surgery tomorrow and they won’t know how long he’ll be out until after the surgery.

  • WSW International Assault from Saturday in Melbourne before a sellout of 500 fans: Cody b Joey Ryan in a staring contest that was billed for the U.S. title, Bandido b Stevie Flilip, Marty Scurll & Brody King b Concrete Davidson & Flip Gordon to win tag titles (Gordon subbed for Ryan in the title match), Walter b Jonah Rock (got a big reaction, worked 90s All Japan main event style), Brian Cage won four-way over Adam Brooks, Robbie Eagles and Tome Filiip to keep Impact X Division title, Brandi Rhodes b Indi Hartwell, Austin Aries lost via DQ to keep title in three-way against Chris Basso and Slex as the ref DQ’d both Basso and Slex after Aries was eliminated so Aries retained.   • World Series Wrestling from today in Perth, Western Australia: Cody came out and said he had gotten heat for defending the U.S. title in a staring contest and then Ryan came out. Ryan challenged him to defend the title in a rock, paper, scissors match. They called it a Dwayne, paper, scissors match. They tied three times but Cody won the next two and was declared the winner. The referee raised Cody’s hand and took the dick flip by Ryan. Brian Cage b Bandido to keep the Impact X  title, Brandi Rhodes b Savannah Summers, Walter & Jonah Rock b Logan Grey & Alex Kingston (said to be ****1/4), Marty Scurll b Damien Slater (said to be excellent), Body King won three-way over Marcius Pitt and Gavin McGavin, Austin Aries b Flip Gordon to keep the WSW title.   • There is a movie called “Destroyer” which stars Nicole Kidman as a police officer who is looking to put away a gang of bank robbers that features Joseph Fatu, who may be related to the Anoa’i family as well as Jay Heiron, an MMA fighter who has fought in UFC, Bellator and Strikeforce. It comes out in December.   • Lester Quarles, one of the great heels in Roller Games history, passed away yesterday at the age of 73 from colon cancer. He had been living in Las Vegas. Lester Quarles was the younger brother of DeWitt Quarles, one of the greatest natural skaters in history, who was with the Roller Derby Bay Bombers in the early 60s. Lester started in the early 60s with Roller Derby but switched to Roller Games in 1966. He had nowhere near the skating talent of his brother, but he had the look and promo ability, and was a tremendous heel as an infield manager in Roller Games, usually with the Texas Outlaws and other heel teams that would face teams like the Los Angeles T-Birds and Eastern Warriors. Quarles was in the hospital for a few months and then went to a rehab center for chemotherapy treatments.
