TUESDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE

Other Wrestling

  • Impact Wrestling posted a statement dedicating tonight’s Impact episode to George Floyd and his family: “Tonight’s episode of IMPACT! is dedicated to George Floyd and his family. IMPACT Wrestling is proud to engage with our fans every Tuesday night during the show, but tonight we will be silent. IMPACT Wrestling stands against racism and violence, in support of diversity and inclusion — for everyone. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Floyd family and all who have endured social injustice.”
  • In response to a racist tweet from Linda Hogan, Tony Khan responded by announcing that she joins Hulk Hogan in being banned from AEW shows: “You’ve now joined your husband in being banned from all AEW shows. Congratulations.”
  • Bushiroad’s Takaaki Kidani spoke to Sports Illustrated about NJPW’s response to the coronavirus pandemic: “It’s only right that New Japan Pro Wrestling should protect their fans and wrestlers as best they can, so cancellations were the natural decision to make. As for wrestler pay, we want every wrestler to be in the absolute best shape that they can be when matches return, and wrestlers should be able to focus on their training without worrying about how they’re making a living.”
  • FTR are appearing on this Friday’s episode of the Jim Cornette Experience.
  • Bobby Fulton posted an update on his health: “Most of my cancer is gone except for a small tumor. Please continue to keep me in your prayers and thoughts!”

MMA

  • Daniel Cormier explained why he thinks Jon Jones is serious about vacating the UFC light heavyweight title: “I believe that he is more serious about walking away because in all those times that he was suspended and hurt and all that other stuff – gone – he kinda learned to live without that belt. For a long time he held the belt that when he lost the belt the first time, he probably thought his world was ending. But then he was gone for two years and life probably didn’t seem all that different. So he’s probably looking at life right now and understanding that, ‘if I walk away from this belt, is my life really gonna change all that much?’ I think that gives him comfort, and being able to say the things that he’s saying. So I think to a degree he does believe, I do believe, that he’s serious.”
  • Jan Blachowicz thinks Jones is just playing games: “I’m just a little bit tired of this situation. I’m just waiting. He’s not quitting. He’s not going to retire. I think this is his game to make more money and this is it. But we will see what the UFC will do. I’m just waiting for the UFC moves and that’s it. We will see. If he quits, then I hope my next fight will be for the title against Dominick Reyes. This is my next scenario if he quits but I don’t believe that. I’m still waiting for him.”
  • Jones helped clean up in downtown Albuquerque after Sunday night’s riots.
  • Chuck Liddell spoke to MMA Fighting about de-escalating tensions at a protest in Huntington Beach.
  • Dan Lambert thinks Amanda Nunes should be considered one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters of all time: “If it’s a conversation on the female GOAT, I don’t think there’s another name you can throw into the mix and have an argument over. Pound-for-pound GOAT is what I think she’s working her way into the mix on. Male, female, weight division, anything. I think her name should be in that mix right now. If you look at the run she’s been on, the champions she’s beaten, the ex-champions she’s beaten. The manner in which she’s beaten them and made it look so effortless, two divisions, I think her name should be in that hat with the other all-time greats, Jon Jones, D.C. (Daniel Cormier), GSP (Georges St-Pierre). I think her name is right there in that mix, male or female.”
  • Gilbert Burns has moved up to number one contender in the UFC’s welterweight rankings.
