SATURDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE

I’m in the midst of my 22hr travel back home after #crownjewel and Hell in a Cell. More on that in a future post. But I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge something that may have gone unnoticed to some. Last night @wweladyrefjess refereed our match. Many firsts in doing that. The first woman to referee in Saudi Arabia. MASSIVE. Actually trying to move the needle in a positive direction. The first woman to referee Hell in a Cell. MASSIVE. She was in there for every part of this insane trilogy that I’m so proud of. Summerslam. Madison Square Garden. Crown Jewel. She’s knocking down barriers and I couldn’t be more proud of her. And she got these gigs not because she’s a woman. It’s because she kicks so much ass at her job. Many more milestones to come. When my daughters watch these matches someday I can’t wait to explain how important you were to all of this. Kudos Jess. Keep making us smile.

Other Wrestling

  • ROH has announced that an event called “Honor For All” will stream on HonorClub on Saturday, November 14. There haven’t been any matches announced for the show yet.
  • Dalton Castle will challenge for Dragon Lee’s ROH Television title on an episode of ROH TV next month.
  • During an interview with Ariel Helwani, Renee Paquette gave an example of how having Vince McMahon in your ear can mess with someone mentally:

I wasn’t on commentary for this moment, but it was after I was on commentary and I was doing a panel. They cut to us in between the show. Tyson Fury was on the show when he was doing a stint in WWE. It was me, Samoa Joe, Booker T, and Beth Phoenix. I was throwing to a package and I said, ‘The Gypsy King Tyson Fury,’ throw to package.

[Vince] is in my ear and he goes, ‘You f*cking ruined it!’ Screaming at me, telling me that I ruined this segment because I did not refer to Tyson Fury as the lineal champion. I referred to him as the Gypsy King. So he’s screaming at me and at this point, I’m over it. I had done the commentary thing and I’m a little hardened to all the circumstances. He’s yelling at me about this and I’m looking down at my notes, maybe I’m looking to Samoa Joe and I’m taking this information in my ear and he thinks I’m ignoring him, so he yells at me again. ‘Do you hear me? Acknowledge that you hear me!’ He wanted me to like look into the camera and be like, ‘Yes sir, I hear you, I understand you, I apologize.’

Just to be yelled at like that for a small… I don’t want to say mistake, it’s not a mistake, I just didn’t call him the lineal champion. I didn’t know it was that necessary and I had ruined the run of Tyson Fury in WWE by not calling him that. To be yelled at like that in front of your peers was pretty demoralizing. To be yelled at that I had ruined the segment, I felt bad about it. Then we had to come back and do an on-cam and I wanted to pull off my headset and just literally go home. At that point, I had just had it.

  • Impact Knockouts Champion Deonna Purrazzo spoke to Sports Illustrated about facing Mickie James at tonight’s Bound for Glory PPV: “I admire her passion and love for women’s wrestling. Mickie’s put her entire life into this. She made her [WWE] TV debut sixteen years ago, and she has put her heart and soul into pushing forward women’s wrestling. She’s fought to show that women are just as important as the men, that we deserve the same spotlights and the same main events and the same TV time. Now she’s back in Impact, pushing the Knockouts division to the next level.”
  • NJPW shared video of Gabriel Kidd’s speech to the crowd from this month’s New Japan Strong tapings. Kidd detailed his struggle with mental health issues during the pandemic and urged people to reach out for help if they’re experiencing their own issues.
