F4W NEWSLETTER: Figure Four Weekly: ROH and NJPW sell out Madison Square Garden
With All In still a few weeks away, the second non-WWE pro wrestling show in the United States to sell over 10,000 tickets since the death of WCW is already official. Tickets for Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling’s G1 Supercard at Madison Square Garden went on sale last week, with the April 6, 2019 event selling out in just a few days. Approximately 9,000 of the 15,000 tickets were sold after the first day of the HonorClub pre-sale, they were up over 12,000 after a second day of pre-sales, and they sold out shortly after being made available to the general public last Friday.
WON NEWSLETTER: August 20, 2018 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Death of Jim Neidhart, ROH/NJPW sell out MSG
The Ring of Honor/New Japan Pro Wrestling show on 4/6 in Madison Square Garden sold out on 8/10 less than 19 minutes after the public on-sale began.
Of course, they had already sold 12,000 of the 15,000 seats put on sale, with the first 9,000 going to Honor Club subscribers on 8/8, and another 3,000 going to those with codes that weren’t hard to get, and in fact were tweeted out.
The significance of this could be monumental in ways that are obvious and other ways perhaps less obvious. While ROH officials would not release a gate number, it was confirmed to be well in excess of $1 million, making it the largest gate for a non-WWE pro wrestling gate not only in the United States, but likely anywhere in the world except for the Far East.

THURSDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE
- Elias tweeted that his concert at the Gramercy Theatre in New York City on Saturday has been canceled: “WWE Management insisted I postpone my solo concert this Saturday in New York City, however they have given me the opportunity to perform that concert live at Summer Slam.”
- Seth Rollins spoke to Sports Illustrated about The Rock potentially working WrestleMania and if he’d like to face him: “That’s cool, too. Don’t get me wrong. I love Rocky. I think he’s great. Love everything he’s done for this business. But my gut, my first instinct, says we don’t need him. We don’t need him. If we’re not the guys who can main event WrestleMania, then how are we ever gonna be The Rock? How are we gonna be Stone Cold Steve Austin? We can’t hold onto these guys forever. We just can’t. To me, let’s do Seth Rollins-Roman Reigns before we do Seth Rollins-The Rock. That’s me.”
- Natalya wrote a column paying tribute to her father in the Calgary Sun.

- Maria Kanellis commented (possibly in-character) after Charlotte Flair called Carmella a diva in a women’s world on SmackDown this week: “Be careful disparaging the women that fought for what you are getting. Experience is more of a bitch then, entitlement ever will be. We were Divas for a reason. We had to be. We all matter in the marathon called the Evolution of Women Superstars. And it’s not over. I see you. I’m with you. We were in the trenches together in full makeup, dresses and heels everyday, every show. Still fighting with babies, careers, husbands, and a stigma. Is it better to fight for the system or the spot? Both. Love you. Together we push the system forward, apart we forget our past. Those that forget their past repeat it.”
- CBS Sports has a feature story on Randy Savage’s summer of 1988 and time as WWF Champion.
