WON NEWSLETTER: September 27, 2021 Observer Newsletter: AEW Dynamite Grand Slam recap, Dark Side of the Ring fallout
Kenny Omega and Bryan Danielson went to a 30:00 draw in what was among the best television matches in U.S. history and arguably the best bout ever on Dynamite in their dream match at the company’s debut in New York City on 9/22 at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The non-title match presumably sets up a longer time limit championship match down the road. For Full Gear, the decision would seem to be Omega defending against either Danielson or Adam Page.
The show was a landmark event for the promotion, breaking both attendance and gate records and ended up as the second largest non-WWE gate for pro wrestling in U.S. history and the largest attended non-WWE pro wrestling event in the country in 22 years.
The most talked about aspect of the week was the ratings, and whether the show would beat Raw. Dynamite in its history had two episodes that beat Raw’s 0.49 (642,000) in 18-49, the very first episode and the show two weeks earlier coming off All Out and the debuts of Bryan Danielson and Adam Cole.

WEDNESDAY NEWS UPDATE

WWE
- Big E appeared on the latest episode of Oral Sessions with Renee Paquette. He spoke about when he learned that he would be winning the WWE Championship:
I didn’t know I was going to Raw ’til that Saturday. We did the show in New York and I was driving from New York to DC, and then I just got a call that my travel and everything was adjusted. So I was like, ‘okay, I’m going to Raw.’ But it wasn’t until Monday afternoon, pretty much right before I sent the tweet, that it was like, ‘alright, all systems are go and this is what we’re doing.’ So pretty much from then on, it feels like my life changed because everything has been so much more hectic. I had a bunch of people reach out and do interviews that Monday. It’s like, ‘alright, we have to do these interviews Monday afternoon.’ I was like, ‘nothing’s been done yet. I just sent out a tweet.’ But things were already in motion.
You know how it is in our industry; you don’t really know until it happens. So I always kept waiting for some sort of swerve or a segment to run too long, or something to happen where I’d have to backpedal or maybe even lose the briefcase. I don’t want this to sound arrogant, but a part of me did. But a larger part of me thought, ‘there’s no way this is going to happen because people would lose their minds. People would be upset.’ That’s not good heat. That’s not compelling, ‘oh, let me watch this.’ That’s like, ‘alright you’ve let me down once more’ heat.
- Big E also discussed how much it meant to him when the crowd chanted for Brodie Lee when he referenced Lee in a promo after winning the WWE Championship:
People chanting his name, I had the moment where I looked at Woods, and just kind of, I’m getting chills thinking about it and I had chills then, it was one of those lines where I didn’t need anyone to react because sometimes you throw out a line and it’s kind of for you and for people at home and I didn’t know people would get it, but man, it was so heartwarming and almost overwhelming to hear those chants and to know that people knew who I was talking about and that his memory is still alive.
I also love, it’s a small thing, but I never called him Luke, maybe in promos, but it was always Brodie. You’re not talking about this pro wrestler who died, when you’re chanting ‘Brodie,’ that’s my friend, that’s my brother. I appreciated that so much. It meant a lot. I just wanted to continue to keep his memory alive that we continue to remember him. What helps, when I’m sad or down about him, he was just so damn funny. I have so many memories and pictures and videos, there’s a lot to smile about with him and his beautiful and incredible family. Amanda and those two crazy boys are still here and still thriving. For me, I know Brodie was one of the first people to come up to Kofi and congratulate him when he won the title. I know he would have done the same for me. There are these footprints, all throughout my life, where Brodie’s big ass feet are just markers of him.
- The Undefeated published a story on how Big E has changed the landscape for Black wrestlers in WWE.
- On last night’s NXT, a video package aired where Bron Breakker said his goal is to be NXT Champion. Breaker warned NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa that he isn’t a patient guy. Ciampa then responded to Breakker. Ciampa said there’s no denying that Breakker has something special, but maybe we shouldn’t put him in the Hall of Fame yet. Ciampa said there’s very little doubt that a title match between him and Breakker will happen soon, and Breakker will drown in an ocean of inexperience when it does.
- Forbes ranked Stephanie McMahon second on their 2021 list of the world’s most influential chief marketing officers.
- During an appearance on Out of Character with Ryan Satin, Riddle was asked about the biggest lessons he’s learned since moving to the main roster:
I’d say the biggest lessons are this is entertainment, and maybe don’t talk too much trash. I wouldn’t say I got in trouble, but people aren’t happy when I say certain things. And I’ll say this; it’s not old school, but there’s this slight old school mentality on the main roster rather than many other companies or the indies, where it’s like you’ve got to watch what you say and be super respectful all the time. I try to be 100 percent of the time. Randy (Orton) even said when he first met me, he didn’t like me. And I was like, ‘I’ll be honest Randy. I heard that interview and I was sad. You never told me you didn’t like me. I thought we were cool.’ I guess he didn’t like me. And then he saw me and Stallion Pete (Dunne) tag at TakeOver, and he actually tweeted ‘I didn’t like you or something. But I get it. Good luck.’
Even when I came up to the main roster, I guess I didn’t shake his hand. But it wasn’t like I was trying to be disrespectful, I thought he was busy. He’s Randy Orton. I don’t want to bother him. But I guess he took that — some people take certain things as disrespect. Me, I’m trying to be the best Riddle I can be and that’s all I can do. So I think it’s more business. I’ve learned how to handle money better and do things better in that sense and fashion. These things have happened since my main roster debut, so I’ve learned a lot of lessons. I’ve matured a lot.
