F4W NEWSLETTER: Figure Four Weekly: Seth Rollins wins Universal title at SummerSlam

This year’s SummerSlam main event was a pivotal moment in the career of Seth Rollins.

If that wasn’t made clear going into the pay-per-view, it certainly felt true in the moment. As much as headlining a Big Four PPV is a huge spot for anyone, Rollins’ match against Brock Lesnar came at a time when Rollins was at a tipping point. He could either win and regain his momentum — or his character would probably have to go in a different direction.

With how WWE built to their match, Rollins winning was the right outcome. He had been viciously beaten down by Lesnar in angles on Raw each of the last two weeks. After the second attack, a subdued Rollins vowed to be at SummerSlam and guaranteed that he would defeat Lesnar.

Rollins came through on his guarantee. After hitting his third curb stomp of the match, Rollins pinned Lesnar to regain the Universal title. The match delivered on a much higher level than Rollins’ previous bouts against Lesnar. Rollins was put over strongly and positioned as the current top babyface in the company.

  • Buddy Murphy sent out a tweet challenging Daniel Bryan to a match on SmackDown: “Last week on #SDLive, @WWERomanReigns and I went face to face & left it all in the ring. If @WWEDanielBryan has an issue with me, he can meet me in the same place I met Roman! Challenge issued.”
  • The Undertaker is appearing at Comic Con Scotland in Edinburgh on October 13.
  • On this week’s episode of the Edge & Christian podcast, Edge discussed his SummerSlam appearance and spearing Elias at the PPV. Edge said the segment was a last-minute thing. He said he does his own fight scenes when acting and has done a couple of spears. He noted that he knows what his real limitations are — and hitting a spear isn’t one of them. Edge said he feels like he’d able to do a match tomorrow, but from what he knows WWE’s medical staff wouldn’t allow it.
  • WWE uploaded a video where Drake Maverick unsuccessfully tried to win the 24/7 title from Elias at a recording studio.
  • WWE posted an interview where Triple H discussed the importance of King of the Ring.

Pro Wrestling

  • Ahead of their contracts with Impact Wrestling expiring, a sendoff for LAX (Santana & Ortiz) took place at last night’s Impact tapings in Mexico City. Also at last night’s tapings, Michael Elgin issued a challenge for Naomichi Marufuji to face him at Bound for Glory in Villa Park, Illinois on October 20. Dr. Wagner Jr. said he and other AAA wrestlers will be at Bound for Glory.
  • Jon Moxley defeated Pentagon Jr. in their match at Northeast Wrestling’s Prison Break show in Poughkeepsie, New York last night. The finish was Moxley ripping Pentagon’s mask off and hitting his elevated double-arm DDT. After the match, Pentagon cut a promo about wanting a rematch. He said he’d see Moxley in AEW.
  • ROH confirmed that this year’s Final Battle PPV will take place at the UMBC Event Center in Baltimore on December 13.
  • The family of Atsushi Aoki issued a statement thanking the fans of AJPW: “To the fans of All Japan Pro Wrestling, we are very grateful for the warm words everyone has shared since the passing of Atsushi Aoki. We should have thanked you much sooner, and would like to apologise for failing to do so. It’s been two months since Atsushi passed away, and I still struggle to believe it. He still had so much left to offer, to us, his friends, and the fans as your World Junior Heavyweight Champion. When I attended the memorial show on August 11, it was a hard day for all of us, but I could feel the love shared between Aoki and all of the fans. It was a special day. Again, thank you. We are thankful to the fans, staff, and entirety of All Japan Pro Wrestling who loved Atsushi so dearly. We will continue to support All Japan in the future.   • Anthony Carelli (Santino Marella) has been announced for Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport II in Atlantic City on September 14.
  • Luchasaurus & Marko Stunt will face The Arrows of Hungary in a first round OWE Tag Team title tournament match at The Dome in London on September 18.
  • Nick Aldis and James Storm are each picking two partners for a six-man tag match at Championship Wrestling from Hollywood’s Red Carpet Rumble tomorrow. Allysin Kay will also defend her NWA Women’s title against Heather Monroe.

UFC/MMA

  • Amanda Nunes will defend her bantamweight title against Germaine de Randamie at UFC 245 in Las Vegas on December 14.
  • While doing commentary at Cage Fury Fighting Championships 77 last night, CM Punk got into a confrontation with a fan after telling them that they needed to back up. Punk said the person was screaming “bullsh*t” in his face, apparently not happy with the result of one of the fights on the show.
  • The UFC uploads the fifth, sixth, and seventh episodes of Embedded for tonight’s PPV.
  • Daniel Cormier thinks he’ll win very convincingly in tonight’s heavyweight title main event against Stipe Miocic.
