On the heels of Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor, another unlikely combat sports event seems to have become a genuine possibility. Jon Jones challenged Brock Lesnar to return to the Octagon after regaining the UFC light heavyweight title against Daniel Cormier last Saturday night. “Brock Lesnar,” Jones said. “If you want to know what it feels like to get your ass kicked by a guy who weighs 40 pounds less than you, meet me in the Octagon.”

WON BACK ISSUE: July 10, 2000 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: WWF signs Brock Lesnar, future of ECW, more

With the WWF television situation being straightened out, now all eyes are on the future of ECW, both as far as national television and the company’s survival itself. ECW was officially canceled, as expected, by TNN effective with the show airing on 9/22. This date appears to preclude any chance of USA Network having ECW ready to go on the air the Monday after WWF leaves (which is believed to be the first week of September, although nobody has been able to confirm an official date), in an attempt to have a wrestling show ready to keep at least a small part of the huge audience that by habit tunes to USA in that time slot.

THURSDAY NEWS UPDATE

The new Professional Fighters League announced today the formation of a Strategic Advisory Council and announced big-time players involved, David Hill the former FOX Network Chairman and John M. Fahey Jr. the Chairman of Time Inc and for Chairman & CEO of the National Geographic Society. Hill will be receiving the Pete Rozelle Radio-TV Award from the Pro Football Hall of fame in Canton on Saturday. He spent 22 years with FOX and was involved in the talks that brought UFC to the network in 2011.

Paul Heyman announced last night on WPIX television in New York that he would be doing a talk show with Jim Ross on 8/18 at the famed Gotham Comedy Club in New York. Heyman said if Lesnar didn’t leave SummerSlam with the belt, that he and Lesnar would leave WWE and noted that in ECW, the one thing he always believed in was upholding stipulations.  When he was asked about Jon Jones vs. Lesnar, he said he would leave that to Lesnar’s comments already made publicly.

Alberto and Paige were on the Busted Open radio show today talking about the incident on 7/9 at the Orlando Airport. They downplayed the incident, saying they argue like a normal couple but it’s under the media spotlight. She said that the reason her family wrote what they did is they don’t know the situation and respond based on what they read in social media. He said that they argue, and three minutes later they are fine. Alberto said that he has an agreement with GFW regarding his suspension and when it will be lifted and will be back to work soon. She said she had a CT scan earlier today and can’t wait to get back to WWE once she gets clearance. Paige said Alberto can be an asshole at times but he’s her asshole.

  • A review of “Armed Response,” the WWE movie out this week with Seth Rollins. Another story on that movie.
  • Hooked on Events will have viewing parties for SummerSlam throughout the U.K. There will be viewing parties and in some cases wrestling guests. Viewing will be at Shooters Sports Bars in Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Cardiff, Birmingham and Nottingham, at The Grand Clapham Junction in London, at Walkabout in Sheffield, Derby and Reading and Felsons Sports Lounge in Bornemouth.
  • Sami Zayn is raising money for a mobile medical center in Syria at SamiForSyria.com. He’s raised more than $41,000 of his $48,000 goal.
  • Tomorrow night’s WWE house show in Halifax with the Raw crew is officially sold out. (thanks to Jarvis Googoo) 
  • The Kurt Angle collection starts on the WWE Network on Monday night with matches against Shawn Stasiak, Val Venis, Chris Jericho, Rikishi, The Rock, HHH, Shane McMahon, Steve Austin, Edge, Big Show, Brock Lesnar, Eddy Guerrero, Rey Mysterio, Ric Flair, Shelton Benjamin, Randy Orton and more.
  • University of Florida President Kent Fuchs did a video with Titus O’Neil that will play on 8/18 at 7:30 p.m. at the O’Connell Center at the New Student Convocation. O’Neil was a former football player for the Gators from 1997 to 2000 under Steve Spurrier and was also the Vice President of the Student Government at one time.

  • DAZN, a streaming service that covers Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Japan and Canada, will be offering Mayweather vs. McGregor as part of their 9.99 monthly package in both Germany and Austria. They’ll stream the fight live at 3 a.m. local time with German commentary, available for all major smart TV platforms as well as Amazon Fire Stick, Chromecast, Xbox One, PS 3 and 4, and web browsers, and has apps for Android and Apple devices. They also have a one-month free trial.
