Update on Kenny Omega’s surgery recovery, no estimate for AEW return

Kenny Omega continues to progress in his recovery from abdominal surgery, but there is still no expected date for his AEW in-ring return.

A potentially life-threatening bout with diverticulitis forced Omega out of action in December 2023. He underwent surgery this May and his condition has been improving since. In the new issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer shared the latest on Omega’s recovery. Meltzer writes that Omega still has some pain, but he’s been able to train with moderate intensity. Omega cannot take bumps in the ring yet and there is no estimate for when he’ll be back wrestling:

Regarding Kenny Omega, he still has some pain but he is training with moderate intensity. I don’t expect him back any time soon for wrestling as he’s still got weakness in the abdominal area from the surgery and can’t start taking bumps yet. There is no estimate on a return. As noted, Kota Ibushi, who has also had his physical issues, is looking at returning when Omega returns.

Before having surgery in May, Omega made a brief return to AEW television for an angle where he was laid out by The Elite. It’s expected that Omega will renew his rivalry with Kazuchika Okada when he’s able to wrestle again. Okada took Omega’s spot in The Elite when Omega was kicked out of the group.

Kota Ibushi posted a tweet earlier this month saying that AEW is his home and fans will see a “full comeback” with him and Omega. Ibushi underwent ankle surgery in January but is set to return for DDT Wrestling in Japan on August 25.
