Update on joint AEW/NJPW show rumor

AEW and NJPW could be running a joint show together in the coming months.

Tony Khan is scheduled to make a major announcement Wednesday on Dynamite and a report from the Super J-Cast has indicated a co-promoted event with NJPW could be what he intends to reveal. The show is reportedly to be held on Thursday, June 23 from Chicago, Illinois.

Our own Dave Meltzer commented on the possibility of an AEW/NJPW show during a recent edition of the Sunday Night’s Main Event podcast.

“I heard the rumors of a New Japan/AEW show and the only thing I can say is I asked and it wasn’t denied. It wasn’t confirmed and they’re not going to confirm to me the surprise. So, to me that leaves that one on the table as a potential surprise because if they are not doing that show, I believe I would have been told ‘we’re not doing that show.’ So, I think there’s smoke to that fire.”

Meltzer also commented on other potential announcements Khan could make on Wednesday.

“The streaming deal, we know that he’s working on that. Obviously, he’s got to work on a distribution deal for Ring of Honor.”

With ROH having aired its final episode of Sinclair recently, Meltzer believes that a new distribution deal for the company could be what Khan announces on Wednesday.

“They need new distribution to keep it going. So, I think that timing wise that makes the most sense of a story,” Meltzer continued.
