Tony Khan says ‘it would be an honor’ to bring AEW to Arena Mexico

Tony Khan says bringing All Elite Wrestling to Arena Mexico would be an honor.

The AEW president appeared on Q101 in Chicago on Wednesday and reflected on how he started following CMLL in 2002 after WCW went out of business. He also credited @LuchaBlog with helping him learn more about lucha libre.

Khan said:

“When WCW went out of business, I really got into CMLL for the first time. I needed another wrestling show to watch, and it was 2002 and I just started college at University of Illinois, and I would tape the CMLL shows at my parents house on their DirectTV and then I would go pick up the tapes.”

“Speaking of lucha libre, and being here in Chicago, the Cubs fan is a guy who has a great lucha blog, and still does. He’s been doing it for over 20 years, I think 25 years, probably, and that’s where I learned a lot, because they didn’t have necessarily all the explanations in English of what was happening on the show. So I really would learn a lot about it from him,” Khan continued.

AEW announced on Collision that CMLL stars Mistico, Hechicero, Atlantis Jr, and Mascara Dorada will return to the company later this month. Khan says Mistico will wrestle when AEW returns to Chicago for the November 27 edition of Dynamite.

“I’m so excited to bring Mistico to Chicago next week. It’s Mistico’s AEW Chicago debut next week and I’m so excited for that,” Khan said.

“I can’t wait, eventually, to bring AEW for the first-time ever to Mexico,” he continued. When asked if there are plans for him to do so, Khan responded, “I have never said so but I will say, sooner or later, it absolutely has to happen. If I could go anywhere in Mexico and work with anyone in Mexico I would love to go to Arena Mexico and work with CMLL and bring AEW there for the first-time ever. It would be amazing and I think Salvador (Lutteroth Lomelí) would be open to having us there and if he would have us, it would be an honor to go to Arena Mexico and bring AEW there some time.”

Toni Storm, PAC, Claudio Castagnoli, and Red Velvet have been announced for CMLL’s show on Friday, December 13 at Arena Mexico.

Earlier in the conversation, Khan spoke about some old wrestling he still enjoys watching, specifically 1984 Mid South Wrestling.

“As far as old wrestling, I do watch a lot of the Mid South Wrestling and I enjoy a lot of the Southern territories and things like that. Mid-South and Memphis wrestling, I do watch a lot of that,” Khan said.

“I do love the 1984 Mid South. It’s funny how it comes down to years, doesn’t it? Even today. But absolutely I think 1984 Mid South is some of my favorite television anyone’s ever done,” he continued.

Episodes of Mid South Wrestling from 1984 are being reviewed on The Bryan & Vinny & Granny & Craig & Shawn Show. They reviewed Season 6, episode 2 of Mid South on Peacock last week. The episode is available free without a subscription here.
