Tony Khan: CM Punk promo on AEW Collision premiere ‘would make a lot of sense’

Tony Khan says CM Punk could be given a live microphone when AEW presents the debut episode of AEW Collision.
Punk and FTR vs. Jay White, Juice Robinson, & Samoa Joe is advertised as the show’s main event but Khan recently told Post Wrestling that a promo segment involving Punk on Saturday “would make a lot of sense” as well.
“I don’t want to say too much, yet. I do think it would make a lot of sense, though. I know fans are going to be excited to hear from CM Punk. Obviously, that match is in the main event so that does leave us opportunities in the lead up,” Khan said of a potential Punk promo segment on the show. “I have to admit, it would make a lot of sense.”
Earlier in the interview, Khan spoke about fans being eager to hear from Punk.
“I think people are going to want to hear from CM Punk and people are going to want to see him get involved in big matches and jump into big stories,” Khan continued.
The AEW president frequently referred back to the storied rivalry between Punk and Samoa Joe during the interview as well.
“People are always going to go back to that rivalry between CM Punk and Samoa Joe,” Khan continued. “People have been talking about it even before Samoa Joe arrived in AEW. Not long after that, CM Punk got injured.”
“I do think this match is a huge main event, people are going to be very interested to see what happens. It’s very, very exciting for us to be able to put this match on the first episode of Collision on Saturday.”
Saturday’s show will be the first time that Joe and Punk have shared a ring together since 2005. They wrestled against each other twelve times from 2003-05. Their match on ROH: Punk vs. Joe II on October 16, 2004 was awarded a five star rating from our own Dave Meltzer. Punk’s only other five star match was at Money in the Bank 2011 against John Cena.
Other than the six-man main event, no other matches or segments have been announced for the 6/17 Collision in Chicago. According to WrestleTix, over 8000 tickets have been distributed for the show as of June 4. The AEW Dynamite on 6/21 from Chicago’s Wintrust Arena has less than 5000 tickets out.
