ROH Supercard of Honor media scrum: New champions speak

ROH’s newest champions, plus some already established title holders, spoke to the media following Supercard of Honor.

Here are notes from the early Saturday morning post-show scrum:

ROH World TV Champion Kyle Fletcher —

Fletcher revealed that he had to step away from AEW/ROH for a month recently to get visa issues sorted. He praised Will Ospreay, talked about Rocky Romero as a catalyst for Forbidden Door, and discussed Jushin Liger as an inspiration for his bodypaint at Supercard.

ROH World Champion Mark Briscoe —

Briscoe noted that he had just become ROH World Champion 11 years to the day that his late brother Jay did. He became emotional talking about Jay and struggling in the aftermath of his passing, but credited his faith for pulling him through.

ROH Women’s World TV Champion Billie Starkz —

Starkz spoke mostly in character after her heel turn and fake injury angle leading to her title win at Supercard.

ROH Women’s World Champion Athena —

Athena said she’d love to go to Japan, and that she’s never had that opportunity. She called out AZM as a Stardom performer she’d like to face.

ROH owner Tony Khan —

Khan said that he would like to keep the Forbidden Door pay-per-view a North American concept, but that he is open to the idea of running a joint show in Japan with NJPW at some point, but was careful to point out that he has no intention of trying to invade NJPW’s territory.

Khan credited Eddie Kingston for calling to his attention that Friday marked 11 years to the day that Jay Briscoe had become ROH World Champion.

Khan noted that most of the biggest gates and attendances in ROH’s 22-year history have come in the two years he has owned the company.

Khan said that his relationship with Stardom has improved with that promotion’s new leadership.

Khan spoke at length about how he intends to remain aggressive in the free agent market, but said that recent free agent spending and production costs were one reason that he had to make difficult decisions and release some talent. More details on his comments are here.
