Amid swirling rumors that he and his brother are heading to WWE, current AEW star Rey Fenix has pulled out of a September indie appearance due to what is being called “personal circumstances.”

El Paso, Texas-based New Era Wrestling had booked the 33-year-old for a three-way with Dastan and Arez for Friday, September 27th.

Late Thursday night, the promotion then released the following statement:

“Rey Fenix will be unable to participate in our lucha libre event on September 27th due to personal circumstances. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause as it is beyond our control. However, we remain committed to delivering the finest lucha libre experience in El Paso. We assure you of this promise.”

News broke last week that it’s expected that Fenix and Penta El Zero Miedo are expected to leave AEW with our Bryan Alvarez reporting that the internal belief within WWE is that they are heading there. They were reportedly slated to compete for the AEW Trios titles at All In, but that plan was taken off the table.

Lucha Libre Online reported back in June that Penta’s contract was set to expire between August and September of this year with Fightful reported last week that Fenix’s contract was also coming up at some point this year.

Fenix’s last AEW match was on the July 20th AEW Collision and then teamed with Penta and PAC at a CMLL event a week later. Penta was last on AEW TV in a mid-July edition of Rampage as he and Fenix defeated Private Party.
