WWE’s deal to use Megan Thee Stallion’s “Neva Play” as the new SmackDown theme song reportedly caught some by surprise.

According to a report by PWInsider, Megan Thee Stallion had been expected to work with Mercedes Mone in AEW and the deal with WWE “caught the Mone circle by surprise.”

Mone and the Grammy-award-winning artist met in February at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards in Japan. This led to negotiations between their managers regarding doing something together in AEW. A deal had reportedly been reached and Mone even teased getting in the ring with her during an interview with TMZ last month.

“Whether she’s gonna be my tag team partner or my opponent, we have to see, but I want to get Meg Thee Stallion in the ring very, very soon one day,” she said. Mone also revealed that there had previously been talks about the two working together in WWE but nothing ever came to fruition.

On Friday, Megan Thee Stallion responded to a clip of her music being featured on SmackDown, writing, “I think it’s finally time I make my debut lol”

It’s not clear if WWE’s deal to use Megan Thee Stallion’s music on SmackDown would prevent her from working with AEW.
