Reason for AEW Dynamite Samoa Joe stretcher angle

On AEW Dynamite last night, there was an angle where Samoa Joe was stretchered out following his Stampede Street Fight against Chris Jericho.

Jericho won the street fight by referee stoppage after Big Bill and Bryan Keith helped him take out Joe. The ending of the match was Jericho driving a forklift through a wall while Joe was on it. Joe then got taken away in an ambulance as part of the angle.

Dave Meltzer confirmed on Wrestling Observer Radio that the angle was done because Joe will be away filming the second season of Peacock’s “Twisted Metal” series, where Joe plays the character Sweet Tooth. PWInsider had reported that this was the likely reason for the stretcher angle. Their report said the show starts filming later this month and runs through at least October, but there will be breaks between certain episodes that could potentially allow Joe to show back up in AEW.

“The second season starts filming like in a couple of weeks and it’s going to be filming through I think October maybe,” Meltzer said. “That’s the deal. It was an injury angle to cover that he’s going to be out of action. That’s the situation. That’s why he lost the street fight. That’s why he’s doing the injury angle. And then when he comes back, he’s got a built-in grudge with Jericho to come back for.”

Joe physically plays Sweet Tooth in “Twisted Metal” while the character is voiced by actor Will Arnett. The show is based on the “Twisted Metal” video game series.
