Mercedes Mone: ‘AEW has reignited my fire, passion, and deep-seated love’ of wrestling

Mercedes Mone reflected on the last year of her career in the latest edition of her online publication, Mone Mag.

She debuted for AEW at Big Business in her hometown of Boston on March 13, 2024, but didn’t wrestle her first match for the promotion until over two months later at Double or Nothing, defeating Willow Nightingale to win the TBS Championship.

Mone says the past year in AEW has reignited her passion for wrestling.

She wrote:

“Can you believe it? It’s been a year since I embarked on this incredible journey with AEW! Time truly does fly, and I can confidently say this has been one of the most transformative years of my career. AEW has reignited my fire, passion, and deep-seated love for this sport. It has been a beacon of hope for me, and I am endlessly grateful to AEW and Tony Khan for this opportunity!”

“I am privileged to share the ring with the absolute best women in the world—strong, fierce competitors who push me to elevate my game day in and day out. And let’s not forget the men; their relentless drive inspires me to strive for greatness beyond compare.”

Mone has wrestled three high-profile matches this month: against Momo Watanabe at AEW Revolution in Los Angeles, against Indi Hartwell at House of Glory City of Dreamz, and against Billie Starkz last week on Dynamite. She noted that she took a hard kick to the throat during the match with Watanabe, which left her voice raspy afterward.

“Nothing prepared me for that kick that landed right on my jaw and throat,” Mone said about her match at Revolution. “I instantly grabbed my face, praying nothing was broken. Panic set in for a moment—I could barely speak or swallow—but I knew we were nearing the finish line.”

Bryan Alvarez reported after the match that Mone was dealing with a bruised larynx as a result of the kick.

“I woke up the day after the AEW Revolution, and my throat was sore af, and my voice was so raspy I could probably audition for a horror movie,” Mone later added.

Mone also revealed that her match against Hartwell for House of Glory was originally scheduled to be a mixed tag.

“Initially, the plan was a mixed tag team match, but life has its own plans—my partner welcomed a beautiful baby just a day before the show! The match transformed into a singles bout against Indi Hartwell, and I couldn’t have been more thrilled. I first met Indi back in 2016 at a gym in Australia while on tour with WWE. She approached me, expressing how my match with Bayley in Brooklyn inspired her to pursue wrestling. Fast forward nine years, and I was sharing the ring with her. That’s the magic of wrestling!”
