CM Punk sustains ‘serious’ injury, title situation to be addressed on AEW Dynamite

AEW World Champion CM Punk has suffered a serious injury that will require surgery, believed to be from a tope onto Jon Moxley during their AEW World title match at All Out, according to our Dave Meltzer.

There had been rumors since Sunday that Punk was hurt following the match as he was applying ice during his now-infamous post-match press conference.

Meltzer said, “It’s been confirmed to me no matter what happens discipline-wise that the title situation has to be changed and addressed tonight.”

He said Punk is currently in Chicago and not in Buffalo, New York, where tonight’s Dynamite is taking place. 

Fightful reported that Punk and AEW head Tony Khan met Tuesday. Meltzer is reporting that both Punk & Ace Steel were scheduled for a 4 PM Zoom meeting with AEW personnel today.

He is also reporting that even if Punk isn’t fired, he will need surgery and be out for some time which will necessitate a new champion being crowned.

As reports have gone today, Punk is expected to be suspended or fired Wednesday following a backstage brawl with himself, Steel, the Young Bucks and Kenny Omega. The fight started after Punk called out “the EVPs,” Hangman Page and Colt Cabana during his fiery media session.

This would be the second serious injury Punk has suffered this year. After his World title win at Double or Nothing over Page, he shattered his foot on a crowd dive while walking to the ring for a trios match on the subsequent Dynamite, later saying it was made worse during the actual match that followed. 

An interim title was created with Moxley winning it at June’s Forbidden Door after defeating Hiroshi Tanahashi.

After having surgery, Punk didn’t return until the August 10th Dynamite when he confronted Moxley to set up what would be the first of two matches between them. After Moxley defeated him in three minutes in a Dynamite title match to unify the titles, Punk picked up the win Sunday which was followed by MJF returning after his own absence to assert himself as the next in line for a title shot.
