AEW’s Tony Khan ‘definitely not running for Congress,’ calls filing ‘fake’

On Thursday morning, a hoax candidacy filing led to speculation that AEW president and CEO Tony Khan could be entering the political arena.

Jacksonville Today reported on a statement of candidacy that was filed last September and claimed that Khan would be running as a Democrat in the race to represent Florida’s Fourth Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. Their report was picked up by Pro Football Talk, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, and more.

But it was soon pointed out that Khan wasn’t listed as an active candidate for Congress. In response to Pro Football Talk’s article on the story, Khan posted a tweet confirming that the filing wasn’t done by him and he isn’t running for office. Khan’s denial included references to Tony Schiavone, MJF, and a 1980s Memphis wrestling angle between Eddie Gilbert and Tommy Rich.

“The fact checking standard for @ProFootballTalk reporting is far lower than that of @AEW’s roving reporter @tonyschiavone24,” Khan wrote. “I’m definitely not running for Congress; this filing is faker than Eddie Gilbert’s apology to Tommy Rich in 1984. PFT sources as trustworthy as @The_MJF”

In addition to running AEW, Khan also has roles with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Fulham Football Club. Khan’s father Shahid Khan owns both of those teams.
