AEW Dynamite live results: Mixed tornado tag match

The final Dynamite before Sunday’s Revolution pay-per-view features a mixed tornado tag team match, plus the Owen Hart tournament bracket reveal.

Before Jon Moxley and Swerve Strickland mix it up at Dynasty for the AEW World Championship, they will be on opposite sides of a tornado tag bout on tonight’s episode, with Moxley and Marina Shafir facing Strickland and Willow Nightingale.

The brackets for the Owen Hart Foundation Men’s and Women’s Tournaments will also be revealed on tonight’s episode.

Will Ospreay’s return has also been advertised for tonight’s show. Ospreay was absent on last week’s Dynamite, but defeated AR Fox on the Wednesday night program two weeks ago.

Toni Storm is set to defend the AEW Women’s World Championship at Dynasty against Megan Bayne, but she will face Bayne’s ally Penelope Ford tonight.

Cope will also be in action on tonight’s show, as he takes on Claudio Castagnoli of The Death Riders in one-on-one competition.

AEW Dynamite comes on the air with Excalibur welcoming us alongside Tony Schiavone & Taz, as the music for Jon Moxley hits and he makes his way through the crowd with Marina Shafir ahead of the opening contest. Excalibur informs us Death Riders have attacked Switchblade Jay White prior to the show and has subsequently taken him out of the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament, so the brackets have had to be reset and we’ll find them out later tonight. Excalibur tried to get this over like Death Riders wanted Cope not to have any backup against Claudio Castagnoli tonight.

Swerve Strickland & Willow Nightingale (w/Prince Nana) defeated AEW World Champion Jon Moxley & Marina Shafir in a Tornado Tag

(For being the first ever mixed Tornado Tag, this was pretty fun, as the crowd was into it the whole time. Weapons were kept to a minimum, as only a few tables were needed and the crowd brawls weren’t that long either. The post-match was a good way to get some last moment heat for Moxley, as Strickland has yet another reason to win the match on Sunday, not just the AEW World Title, but revenge for Nightingale.)

Strickland & Nightingale bolted to the ring and started the brawl, as Nana is directing the Swerve’s House chants. Shafir dropped Nightingale with a snap suplex on the floor, as she helped Moxley set up a table ringside. Nightingale & Strickland recover, as the bell officially sounds and the match begins with Shafir hitting multiple Judo throws in the ring. Moxley took Strickland into the ring and flipped off the crowd, allowing Strickland to answer with a perfect dropkick. Backbreaker/Shotgun Dropkick combo from Strickland & Nightingale, who followed with locomotion corner splashes before both hit the Griddy. Shafir returned to attack Nightingale, as Moxley fired off a Cutter and launched Strickland into the front row. Moxley called the shots, as Shafir kept up her attack on Nightingale, who finally slapped Moxley, as he teased a Paradigm Shift, but Strickland came in and had Shafir ready to be dropped with Big Pressure. Shafir audibly yelled for Strickland to do it, but neither pulled the trigger, as Shafir & Nightingale slugged it out on the apron. Nightingale tried a charging boot, but Shafir caught and powerbombed her through the table into commercial.

During break, it was all Shafir & Moxley, who set up another table ringside, as Shafir raked at the back of Strickland in the corner before Moxley followed suit. Nightingale returned and turned everything into a Tower of Doom spot, with Strickland taking a superplex in the process. Nightingale flying solo with multiple corner charges, until Moxley grabbed her by the air, as Strickland flew in with a pump knee, leading to a Nightingale cannonball. Strickland hit a slingshot dive outside on Moxley, as Nightingale spiked Shafir with a Spinebuster for two. Moxley tossed Nightingale out of the ring, leading to Strickland returning and winning a slugfest, but Moxley countered a brainbuster into a Rear Naked Choke. Shafir tried a Triangle on Nightingale, who countered by powerbombing Shafir onto Moxley for the reset.

The ladies went to the floor, as Strickland & Moxley slugged it out again in the ring. Strickland ducked a choke into a rolling Flatliner, but as he charged for a House Call, Shafir shoved Moxley out of the way and she took the bullet. Camera completely missed Nightingale knocking Moxley off the apron through the table, as she dropped Shafir with the Doctor Bomb to get the victory.

Post-match, with everyone celebrating, Moxley snuck into the ring and laid out Nightingale with a Paradigm Shift, bailing before Strickland could get his hands on the AEW Champion. Moxley helped Shafir up and they left through the crowd, as doctors tended to Nightingale.

-Renee Paquette is backstage with FTR & referee Paul Turner, as last week on Collision, Dax Harwood put his hands on Turner and has been fined $10,000 for this. Harwood said he’s taken the fine money and wanted to give it directly to Turner, as he apologized and told Turner to buy his wife something and a nice dinner. Wheeler could barely look at Harwood, who apologized for what he did in the heat of the moment, thinking Wheeler was a security guard on Collision, but come Dynasty, their adding to their history of the greatest tag team of all time. Harwood tried to hug Wheeler, who stopped him and said Sunday, they’ll be fine, but after the PPV, they have to talk. Wheeler walked off, as Harwood apologized to Paquette.

-Highlights of our opening contest was shown, including the previously missed table spot with Nightingale & Moxley. Excalibur told us Nightingale is getting medical attention as we speak and hope to have more information as the night continues.

Men’s & Women’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament Brackets Revealed

Will Ospreay vs. Kevin Knight (replacement for Switchblade Jay White)

Brody King vs. Konosuke Takeshita

Mark Briscoe vs. Kyle Fletcher

Hangman Adam Page vs. a Wild Card

Footage of Knight facing White on Collision last week was shown and we’re told the reason Knight, who lost that match, is in the tournament was due to the endorsement White gave him in the post-match.

Jamie Hayter vs. Billie Starkz

Thunder Rosa vs. Kris Statlander

Julia Hart vs. Mercedes Mone

Harley Cameron vs. Athena

We’re told the tournaments will start this Sunday at Dynasty, but at the moment, we weren’t told which matches it would be. Also, the finals for each tournament will be taking place at Double or Nothing.

Timeless Toni Storm (w/Luther) defeated Penelope Ford

(Aside from the slightly clunky finish, I thought these two worked well with one another and Ford looked good in this, even in defeat. This was a good bounce back win for Storm after Thunder Tits lost the tag main event last week. They’ve done a fantastic job building interest in the World Title match at Dynasty and couldn’t have made Megan Bayne look like more of a monster leading up to it.)

Storm wasted no time, attacking immediately with a spinning back breaker and fisherman’s suplex for a near fall. Storm missed the hip attack, allowing Ford to hit a shotgun dropkick and springboard double knees on the apron before mocking Storm’s pose. Ford clocked Storm with a big boot and was in control heading into commercial.

We returned to Ford hitting her handspring back elbow and charging punt kick, but as she went to lick Storm, her tongue was bit by Storm and it led to a slugfest. Tony Schiavone said he’s never seen something like that, which surprised Taz, who said Schiavone had been doing this since 1932. Storm ramped up, hit Sweet Cheek Music and spiked Ford with a DDT for a near fall. A leg capture STF from Storm led to Ford getting a rope break, as she pulled Storm to the outside and hit a moonsault off the apron. Back inside, Ford hit a gutbuster for two, as she missed a follow high kick, letting Storm hit a snap German suplex. Both appeared briefly on different pages, as Ford dodged Storm Zero, she tried her Matrix Stunner, but Storm avoided and hit Storm Zero for the win.

Post-match, Megan Bayne slowly walked out and gave a golf clap, as she stared down Storm, who welcomed her to fight, but she didn’t bite and just posed.

-Renee Paquette is backstage and asked Swerve Strickland about any update on Willow Nightingale. Strickland said she’s strong and brave, which is why he didn’t have any problem facing the Death Riders with her. Strickland said Moxley knew the history of neck injuries Nightingale has had, so now, he’s on the hunt. Strickland won’t rest until he gets his hands on Moxley again, tonight. By the end of the night, he promises that’ll happen. Paquette seemed very unsettled by the threat, as Strickland went back to sitting by Nightingale’s side, who was tended to by the doctor.

-Excalibur tells us about All In: Texas week leading up to the big event in July. Dynamite, Collision, Starrcast, Death Before Dishonor and finally All In: Texas will take place during the week.

MVP & Lashley Meet With MJF

MVP & Bobby Lashley make their way to the ring, as we’re told severe weather has caused Shelton Benjamin from being there tonight. Before Lashley could say a word, MJF’s music hits and he makes his way to the ring. A fan had a sign that red Sign My Sign and MJF faked like he would, chucking the pen away, leaving the fan with a hilariously heartbroken expression.

MJF compliments how good MVP looks before telling Bob how much he disrespected him last week. MJF formally introduced himself and said he loves the big man, Shelton Benjamin, wishing him well and to stay safe he’ll see him down the road. MJF said Lashley has done a lot in his career, but this is AEW and he’s standing on the block MJF built. MJF said he could help Lashley & Benjamin hold the Tag Titles as long as they please, just like they could help him regain his AEW World Championship. MJF in the Hurt Syndicate is just good business, MVP knows it, MJF knows it, even the mouth-breathers in the Midwest knows it and told the crowd to talk to him when Peoria ever mattered. Lashley might not want MJF, but Bobby, you big beautiful bastard, you need MJF.

Lashley said let’s be clear, out of respect to MVP, he won’t leave him laying right now and tells MJF he doesn’t like or trust him. The Hurt Syndicate doesn’t need him, unless he proves otherwise, he needs to get out of his face right now. MJF questioned having to prove himself, but says goodbye to the crowd and walks to the back, giving one last glance on his way out.

Big Bill & Bryan Keith’s music hits and they have a face-off with Lashley & MVP, as Bill places a seat down for Lashley to sit and watch what they do.

Big Bill & Bryan Keith defeated ?

We were never told the names of the two Bill & Keith faced, as Bill launched one of them over the top with a gorilla press down to the feet of Lashley. The other tried to attack Bill from behind and rightfully got “You F’d Up” chants, as Keith ran in with a charging knee, as Bill hit a chokeslam for the win.

Lashley & MVP smiled and applauded the slaughter, as Bill took the mic and said on Collision, they whooped Top Flight’s ass and tonight they whooped…their ass and on Sunday, they’re whooping The Hurt Syndicate’s ass. It’s because they want a shot at the AEW Tag Team Titles. MVP was going to say something, but Lashley stopped him and they just smiled and went to the back.

-Renee Paquette is backstage with Mercedes Mone and is asked about facing Julia Hart this Sunday in the opening round of the Owen Hart Tournament at Dynasty. Mone said Hart is a former TBS Champion, but not the greatest, as it’ll take more than tricks and spells to defeat her. Paquette brings up on Collision, Athena & Hart taking on Mone & her partner, with Mini-Mone entering the shot, as Harley Cameron said she’s been contemplating, as her & Mone brought the house down…down under. Cameron has been thinking of a great name for them, but before she could say it, Mone silenced Cameron & Mini-Mone, as she walked off, until Cameron called them The Money Wrath Train. Excalibur said there’s time to work shop that before Collision, while Taz said he wants a puppet of his own.

Will Ospreay & Kevin Knight defeated Blake Christian & Lee Johnson

(This match did exactly what it was meant to do, get the crowd, who weren’t entirely familiar with Knight previously, over. By the end of the match, they were fully into Knight and popped when learning Knight & Ospreay will have their Owen Hart Cup match at Dynasty. This was simple, but very effective. The Owen is Ospreay’s to lose, obviously, but I’m hopeful Knight continues looking strong after Sunday, he’s a great signing for AEW.)

Schiavone mentions Christian having a 7 match win streak in ROH, including a win over Knight. Ospreay & Christian trade shoulder tackles and kip-ups. Snap hurricanrana by Ospreay, as he tagged Knight, who hit a leaping splash for two. Double dropkick sent Christian & Johnson to the outside, allowing Ospreay & Knight to ramp up the crowd and hit stereo dives. Back inside, Johnson tripped up Knight, giving Christian a chance to hit an enzugiri, as Ospreay was hit with a Spear on the apron heading to commercial.

Johnson & Christian controlled the entire break, but when things returned, Knight mounted a comeback, leaping a double clothesline attempt, diving for an Ospreay hot tag. Pip, Pip, Cheerio connected on both men, as did the handspring corkscrew kick, but Johnson pulled the legs out, allowing Christian to hit a corkscrew dive. 450 Double Stomp back inside by Christian, but Ospreay countered a suplex from Johnson into a Stundog. Ospreay leveled Christian before tagging Knight, as he ran wild with corner splashes, placed Johnson on Christian’s shoulders, hit a massive dropkick, leading to Johnson hitting a Destroyer on his own partner. Ospreay sent Christian outside, as Knight hit a huge springboard lariat to get the win.

Post-match, Tony Schiavone got on the mic and said the match between Ospreay & Knight in the Owen Hart Cup Tournament will take place at Dynasty. Ospreay & Knight shook hands, but Knight pulled him back in briefly. This was a really strong Dynamite debut for Knight,

The Opps are in the back, as Samoa Joe said he started this group because he knew the battlefield was changing and he knew he’d need to switch up his arsenal. Come Dynasty, he, HOOK & Katsuyori Shibata will be in the building, watching and seeing all. Don’t let them catch you lacking.

Brody King defeated Lance Archer (w/Don Callis)

(If you like two big dudes just beating the hell out of each other, this was the match for you. A needed win for King here ahead of his opening round Owen Hart Cup match with Konosuke Takeshita. As much as I would love to see a Ospreay (assuming he wins over Knight) vs. Takeshita rematch from their Revolution 2024 classic, I wouldn’t hate seeing King pull off a huge upset and we get a Continental Classic rematch with Ospreay.)

Callis had words with a fan cosplaying as him in the front row (this is the second week in a row this has been a thing, I hope it continues). Archer & King wasted no time trading heavy shots, as Archer hit a clothesline over the top to the outside. Callis said they’re playing the long game, as he wants Archer to win tonight, but this is about softening up King for Takeshita in the Owen Hart Cup. Archer hit a tumbleweed off the apron, but King battled back with a charging cross body against the barricade. In the ring, Archer took the ref, allowing Callis to distract King enough for Archer to hit a big boot and back in control. “F Don Callis” chants from the Peoria crowd, as Excalibur said they’re chanting what we’re all thinking, as Archer & King continue their brawl around ringside into commercial.

We return to Archer hitting locomotion splashes in the corner, but King answered with a stalling German suplex, running cross body and senton for two. King charged, but ran into a Black Hole Slam for an Archer near fall. Big chokeslam connected for another two, as Archer chased referee Paul Turner from the ring. The brief delay allowed King to hit a series of corner strikes, including a cannonball and wild lariat for two. Archer spun out of a powerbomb attempt, but King was there to meet him with another lariat to get the win.

Cope defeated Claudio Castagnoli

(Real solid main event in what I believe is a first time singles meeting between these two. They could go either way with the Trios Titles at Dynasty. Either you have FTR do the turn then or get more out of this tease and have them win the titles, with Harwood feeling held back having to continue teaming in trios instead of going for tag title gold again. I’m looking forward to seeing which direction they choose.)

The fans tried their best to sing along to Cope’s theme, but there’s just no re-creating the magic of that Grand Slam crowd singing it in Australia. Castagnoli rushed Cope before the bell, as referee Bryce waited to get the word from Cope to officially start the match. Castagnoli sent Cope crashing into the barricade, but Cope recovered and launched Castagnoli off the apron into the LED board, as Cope was relentless with forearms. Back inside, Cope avoided an uppercut into a backslide for two, as Cope held onto the wrist for multiple lariats, only Castagnoli no sold, returning some of his own. Neither gave ground, as Castagnoli went full Mike Tyson, biting the ear of Cope, who ducked a lariat into a sit-out slam for two. Castagnoli tried recovering on the apron, but Cope charged with a Spear through the ropes to the outside. Cope wanted another dive, but Castagnoli hit an uppercut in mid-air into commercial.

Back from break, Castagnoli hung up Cope throat first on the top rope before heading up top, only to be cut off. Cope managed an avalanche bulldog off the top for the reset, as Cope wanted the Impaler, Castagnoli sent Cope into ref Bryce, allowing Castagnoli to get an eye poke, double stomp and Giant Swing for 10 revolutions, but a two count. Castagnoli wanted the Neutralizer, but Cope spun out into the Impaler for two of his own. Cope wanted a sunset flip, but Castagnoli rolled through into the Sharpshooter. Cope managed to reverse into the Grindhouse, but Castagnoli got the ropes and to the apron. Cope followed, but was planted with a snap powerslam on the edge of the ring. Castagnoli launched Cope over the barricade and threw ref Bryce into the ring, demanding a countout. Cope just broke the count, but walked into a huge lariat for two. They trade missed Neutralizer & Spear attempts, as Castagnoli tried a springboard uppercut, only for Cope to hit a big boot in mid-air. Cope charged for the Spear, but Castagnoli hit a pop-up uppercut for two. Neutralizer connects, but again, Cope kicked out. A frustrated Castagnoli grabbed two chairs and wanted a Con-Chair-To, but ref Bryce ripped it away, allowing Cope to hit a low blow and Spear for the win.

-Renee Paquette is backstage, trying once again to get a medical update on Willow Nightingale from Swerve Strickland, who was bickering with Prince Nana, who left. Strickland told Paquette no offense, he’s looking for her husband. Hangman Adam Page power walks in, got into Strickland’s face and said he’s wasting his time as security bolted in. Page said he made a promise Strickland would never hold the title again, Strickland said let it go, Page screamed Strickland broke into his house, Strickland responded Page burned his house down and Strickland admitted he deserved it. Page took this admission in and walked away before Death Riders attacked Strickland from behind, as Moxley sent Strickland crashing into a glass container of some sort before being dragged to the ring.

Strickland was left surrounded by all of the Death Riders, as they all held him for Moxley, who slapped him repeatedly. Yuta dumped a bucket of glass in the ring, as Castagnoli hit the Ricola Bomb onto it. Moxley got in his last-minute trash talk before they all left, only Strickland slowly rose up like he was the Undertaker, laughing at Moxley and crew, as it’ll take a lot more than that to put Strickland down at Dynasty.
