Sir Elton John has the week off, as instead of Saturday Night, Metalingus kicks off this week’s Collision. New TNT Champion Adam Copeland made his way to the ring for his first TNT Title defense, as Tony Schiavone, Nigel McGuinness, and Ian Riccaboni were on the call. Copeland reiterated that he was restarting the Cope Open and that this time, the TNT Title would be on the line. Answering the challenge this week was former Copeland associate Matt Cardona.
AEW TNT Title Match – Adam Copeland defeated Matt Cardona to retain
The match was quite good, as these two worked well together. But this London, Ontario crowd was rabid to start this show, elevating this match to another level. I hope the energy stays up for the rest of the show. The post-match angle gave us an interesting matchup to consider.
The two had an opening exchange as the crowd went wild for both men. Copeland slid to the floor and played rope-a-dope with Cardona before hammering him with a clothesline. Copeland brought Cardona to the apron, but Cardona poked him in the eyes and sent him into the ring stairs to big boos as we went to our first commercial.
After a commercial, Copeland fought his way out of a headlock before he and Cardona had the same idea for three straight moves – cross body, clothesline, big boot – leaving both men down. Cardona went to the top rope before Copeland yanked him down to the mat. Cardona cut Copeland off as he went to the top, but Copeland brought him down with a gourdbuster before hitting a Steiner-esque bulldog off the top rope for a nearfall.
Copeland hit the Edge-o-matic – Cope-o-matic? – for a nearfall. Cardona played rope-a-dope and kicked the ropes as Copeland got back into the ring before hitting the Impaler DDT for a nearfall, looking to add insult to injury to his former mentor. Cardona talked trash to Copeland in the corner as the London crowd booed him.
Copeland went to spear Cardona on a facewash boot attempt, but Cardona moved out of the way and sent Copeland into the turnbuckles. Copeland countered Radio Silence with a Buckle Bomb, then a powerbomb in the center of the ring for a nearfall. Copeland went for a spear, but Cardona caught him with Radio Silence for a big nearfall. Cardona set up for a spear, but Copeland got a spear of his own to score the win.
Copeland celebrated the win until the lights went out. When the lights came back up, it wasn’t Sabu staring him down, but Malakai Black. Black spit out some black mist before Buddy Matthews jumped Copeland from behind. Mark Briscoe came out for the save before he was overwhelmed by the numbers. Eddie Kingston made his way to the ring and stood with Briscoe and Copeland. With the House of Black outnumbered the lights went out again. No, Sabu didn’t come to help them, Black and Matthews bailed out.
Earlier today, FTR spoke with Lexy Nair. Wheeler appreciated being considered the favorites, but they were coming in cold, having lost to Jon Moxley and Claudio Castagnoli their last time out. Harwood said that while everyone loved a Cinderella team like The Infantry, FTR had to beat them, and had to become the first three-time AEW World Tag Team Champions.
Tony Schiavone welcomed out The Acclaimed. No rap from Caster, as the Acclaimed were serious after Bullet Club Gold invaded Billy Gunn’s house on Rampage. Gunn was upset, and he blamed Jay White for it. He said that he’s main evented Madison Square Garden many more times than White had, and unlike White, he actually won. Gunn announced that he would be taking on Jay White one-on-one on Dynamite. Caster challenged The Gunns to stay in the back for the match if they had faith in White beating him. Bowens said that he was right about White and that they were all cowards. He said that the demise of Bullet Club Gold began on Wednesday, and everyone loved the Acclaimed.
AEW World Tag Team Title Tournament Quarter Final Match – FTR (Cash Wheeler & Dax Harwood) defeated The Infantry (Carlie Bravo & Shawn Dean)
The Infantry showed a lot more than they did against the House of Black and looked like a good team to add some depth to the division.
Wheeler and Dean started, with Dean scoring with a pair of armdrags. Bravo tagged in but Wheeler muscled his way to the corner for a tag. Bravo and Dean ran wild with dropkicks to send FTR to the floor. Wheeler and Dean reset, with Wheeler taking control after a pair of shoulders into the gut. Dean fired up with strikes in the corner and hit a jumping elbow for a nearfall.
Bravo tagged in, but Wheeler caught him with a powerslam before tagging out to Harwood. Harwood lit Bravo up with chops before taking him up and down with a superplex. After a commercial, FTR caught Bravo on a dive before Dean dove over the top onto the pile. Bravo hit a crossbody, but Harwood rolled through for a nearfall. The two got into a pinning predicament before FTR went for a stuff piledriver, but The Infantry cut it off and hit a crossbody for a nearfall.
The Infantry set up for a double-team, but Wheeler cut it off and hit some combo offense on Bravo for a nearfall. FTR went for a double suplex, but Dean speared Wheeler, leading to Bravo getting a nearfall with a rollup. The Infantry hit an enzuigiri into a neckbreaker for a nearfall. Dean hit a butterfly DDT before getting sent to the floor.
Harwood and Bravo got into it, with Dean assisting on a sunset flip. We got a long counter exchange before Bravo sent Harwood into Wheeler head-first before rolling him up for a nearfall. Bravo fought FTR two-on-one, but Harwood sent Wheeler over his head into position for the Shatter Machine. FTR hit the Shatter Machine to score the win.
Ricky Starks & Big Bill were backstage with Lexy Nair, making their first appearance since losing the tag team titles in February. Big Bill said that while they weren’t looking past Top Flight, they were the #16 seed while he and Ricky were the #1 seed. Starks said that he and Bill were going to beat Top Flight here, then guaranteed another victory over FTR in the semifinals.
Adam Copeland, Eddie Kingston, & Mark Briscoe were backstage. Copeland was fired up and challenged The House of Black to a trios match at Dynasty. Briscoe plugged his ROH World Title match against Kingston this Friday at ROH Supercard of Honor before telling the House of Black that they messed with the wrong people. Kingston insulted the House’s “spooky stuff” and said that they would be spitting blood and teeth instead of mist.
Kyle O’Reilly defeated JD Drake
Drake took down O’Reilly with a chop as Tony Schiavone announced next week’s Collision starting at 11:30 EST/10:30 CST. Drake took O’Reilly down with a Shining Wizard but missed a Vader Bomb and a cannonball. O’Reilly peppered Drake with leg and chest kicks before taking him down with a leg sweep. O’Reilly hit the Ax and Smash kicks before hitting a running chest kick for a nearfall. O’Reilly caught Drake’s arm on the kickout and locked on an armbar to score the quick win. The Undisputed Kingdom celebrated with O’Reilly again, lifting him onto their shoulders.
We got a quick video package hyping Powerhouse Hobbs vs. Will Ospreay for Dynamite, in another Don Callis Family battle.
AEW World Tag Team Title Tournament Quarter Final Match – Top Flight (Dante & Darius Martin) defeated Big Bill & Ricky Starks
An unfortunate result here, as it looked like Starks got hurt at some point leading up to the quick – and possibly audibled – finish here. Hopefully, it’s nothing serious. Meanwhile, while this is far from the way you want to see it happen, Top Flight gets a meaningful win and an opportunity to show out in the next round against FTR.
Starks and Darius started by trading quick offense before the Martins got a quick tag out and hit some tandem offense. Bill tagged in and cornered Dante, but Top Flight sent Bill and Starks to the floor with a double dropkick. Starks cut off Dante from the floor, allowing Bill to lay Dante out with a big boot as we went to a commercial.
Back from the break, Bill sent Dante into the ring over the second rope from the floor. Bill hit a big corner splash, but a second one missed before Dante hit a cannonball to the floor. Tags on both sides, as Darius ran wild on Starks. Darius hit a wall walk Pele Kick on Starks before both guys got sent to the floor. Darius got a quick nearfall with a jackknife cradle that Starks didn’t get a strong kickout on. Darius sent Dante over Starks before catching a spear, then hitting a tornado DDT off of his brother’s chest for the win. Nobody seemed ready for that ending, as it took a moment for Top Flight’s music to hit after the three count.
Christopher Daniels was backstage. He said that while he’s been in AEW since day one, AEW wasn’t about tenure, it was about wins. He challenged Malakai Black to a match on Rampage.
Thunder Rosa defeated Lady Frost
Rosa was in firm control early, scoring with a hurricanrana and a dropkick. Frost caught herself on the apron before coming back in with a cartwheeling headscissors and a neckbreaker for a nearfall. Frost evaded a corner charge only for Rosa to pop out of the corner with a clothesline as we went to a commercial.
Back from the commercial, Rosa countered a cartwheel into a rollup for a nearfall. Rosa fired up with a dropkick into the ropes. Rosa went for the Tijuana Bomb, but Frost kicked her way out and hit the Killa Chilla for a nearfall. Rosa ducked a hurricane kick and hit the Tijuana Bomb for the win.
Timeless Toni Storm, Mariah May, & Luther were backstage with Renee Paquette. Renee announced that the top two contenders in the rankings would have a match on Dynamite for a future title shot, those two contenders being Thunder Rosa and Mariah. Storm asked May if this was her plan all along, then kissed her and declared it a brilliant plan. Storm told Rosa that she should have retired as champion because she would never hold the title again.
The announcers ran down the card for Dynamite, with the additions of Mariah May vs. Thunder Rosa and Chris Jericho calling out Hook.
We got a great video package highlighting the career of Will Ospreay, leading up to the dream match against Bryan Danielson at Dynasty.
Blackpool Combat Club (Bryan Danielson & Claudio Castagnoli) & Katsuyori Shibata defeated Lance Archer & The Righteous (Dutch & Vincent)
A fun and energetic main event. I’d like to see more of the Righteous and Archer in general, as they were a very good heel monster team here.
Shibata and Archer started by trading forearms before Shibata cut Archer down with a dropkick to the leg. Archer caught a kick and went for a suplex, but Shibata got a sleeper hold in. Archer threw Shibata down but got his big boot sidestepped. Dutch and Castagnoli tagged in, with Dutch taking Castagnoli down with a bodyslam and a shoulder block. Castagnoli hit the ropes with authority before taking Dutch down with a shoulder block. Castagnoli hit a big bodyslam and a double stomp before tagging Danielson.
Danielson laid in the chest kicks in the corner as the announcers noted his and Castagnoli’s travel schedule to get to London, Ontario from Mexico City, where they wrestled for CMLL last night. Dutch cut off Danielson with a body block before tagging in Vincent. Danielson laid in the kicks to Vincent before taking out Dutch and Archer with dives. Vincent sent Danielson into the barricade as we went to a commercial.
After the commercial, Dutch was taunting the crowd when he got caught in a LeBell Lock by Danielson. Archer quickly broke it up, allowing Dutch to clubber Danielson in the corner. Danielson dove out of the way of a corner charge before Archer knocked his partners off of the apron. Archer and Dutch bodyslammed each other onto Danielson before Archer shot Danielson into a Bossman Slam from Dutch for a nearfall.
Dutch brought Danielson to the top rope, but Danielson knocked him down and hit a shotgun dropkick. Castagnoli tagged in and ran wild on Archer, clubbering him with uppercuts in the corner. Castagnoli hit a cutter out of the corner before setting up the Giant Swing, but the Righteous cut him off. Shibata cut off Autumn Sunshine before Shibata hit hesitation dropkicks on both men.
Castagnoli and Shibata hammered Archer with strikes before Castagnoli got the Giant Swing on Archer. Castagnoli transitioned into the Sharpshooter before Dutch cut Castagnoli off with a side suplex. We got a move train that ended with Archer hitting a ripcord Bossman Slam. Vincent tagged in and hit a Swanton Bomb for a nearfall but got a guillotine choke countered with a vertical suplex. Shibata tagged in and hit the hesitation dropkick on Vincent.
Dutch broke up a submission attempt, leading to another move train. Shibata kicked out of a rollup with the tights before locking on a sleeper hold. After Castagnoli hammered an interfering Archer with a running uppercut, Shibata hit the Penalty Kick on Vincent to score the win.
